NEW YORK (AP) -- On last season's "American Idol," David Archuleta's version of "Imagine" earned him the title of "the one to beat" early on. He never once placed in the bottom three. In the end, David ended up losing the crown to another David -- David Cook -- but he still got a chance to pursue his pop star dreams with a record deal on 19 Recordings/Jive Records.

David Archuleta, 17, has just released his first album.

David Archuleta, 17, has just released his first album.

Now, the 17-year-old runner-up is hoping all those votes on TV's top-rated show will parlay into album sales. His self-titled debut is in stores now.

So far, the teen's future looks promising. His first single "Crush" peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and is a top download on iTunes.

David Archuleta talked about going solo and what he thinks Simon Cowell may have to say about his record.

Q: What does it feel like to release this album?

David Archuleta: The album coming out is a pretty exciting time for me in my life because I've always been looking forward to it. After all the hard work over the summer and a lot of time and effort put into it, it's cool to see the finished product, because now everyone's gonna be able to get a chance to listen to it and it's really exciting.

Q: David Cook's album comes out this month too. Do you feel like there's a competition all over again with him?

Archuleta: It never really felt like a competition with Cook. Not even on the show were we competitive very much. We're kind of in our different categories in the music world but I'm just hoping for the best. I'm real excited for his album too. I've heard a few of the songs and they sound great.

Q: What about fame has surprised you? Or what didn't you expect?

Archuleta: Well, the surprise of fame I guess is actually the fact that I'm actually dealing with it. You know, you see what other people have to go through and stuff, all the attention and I guess I never really realized that it would actually happen to me the way it has. That's pretty crazy to see how it goes with all the gossip and rumors and celebrity stories. People always wanting to know everything about what's going on, every little bit of your life but I guess that's what comes with this whole thing.

Q: You got to act in your first music video for "Crush." What was that like?

Archuleta: It was a lot of fun. I was a little nervous at first because I was wondering, "Oh, am I gonna be able to pull it off? I don't know if I'm a very good actor or anything like that (laughs)." But it was really easy and it was a lot of fun to do and I think it went really smoothly. It was just a lot of fun to be able to get into character and the story and the whole thing and be able to kind of like, work with other kids my age in the music video.

Q: There will be four judges on the next season of "American Idol." What effect will that have on the show?

Archuleta: Having a fourth judge on the show I think will be really exciting ... it will add a kind of nice flavor to the group and Kara DioGuardi is amazingly talented. She's an amazing songwriter and singer. She was one of the writers of one of the songs that is on my album, she did backup vocals on that. She's such an awesome person. She has a really spunky personality too. It'll be fun to see her on the show.

Q: What do you think Simon Cowell will have to say about your album?

Archuleta: You know you never know what Simon's gonna say (laughs). I hope that he likes it. You never know what he'll think. I'm sure he'll have an opinion but hopefully he'll appreciate the work that went into it. I know he understands how much work goes into making an album. Hopefully there will be at least one song he likes (laughs).

Q: You're in your senior year of high school. How are you balancing school work with the music business?

Archuleta: It is quite a challenge trying to balance both school and this crazy music world but I've been trying to keep up with that. ... So far it's been pretty good. The entertainment world is so unpredictable. There's not really like, "Oh, this comes after this and then this time and then you get a day off on weekends." It doesn't work that way. It's like, "OK, oh by the way later on today you're going here and doing this." It's like, "OK." Flying out here or there or everywhere

LOS ANGELES —  Michael Jackson's mother gained permanent custody of her late son's children during a hearing Monday that saw a last-minute objection by the pop icon's former dermatologist.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff made a series of key rulings during the morning portion of the hearing. In addition to approving Katherine Jackson's guardianship petition, he also granted monthly stipends to the 79-year-old and the three young grandchildren she is now charged with raising.

The ruling came after a few tense moments in which an attorney for Beverly Hills Dr. Arnold Klein, Michael Jackson's longtime dermatologist, raised nonspecific objections to the custody arrangements. The attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, said they were based on the doctor's long-term relationship with the singer and his children.

"Legally, he is not a presumed parent," Kaplan said. He said Klein had concerns about the children's education and other day-to-day parenting issues.

Beckloff ultimately determined Klein didn't have legal standing to object to the care of Jackson's children, but said he could raise objections later. Klein has repeatedly denied tabloid reports that he is the biological father of Jackson's children, saying last month on "Larry King Live" that "to the best of my knowledge" he is not.

Diane Goodman, an attorney for Katherine Jackson, told Beckloff that Jackson's youngest son, Prince Michael II, was born through a surrogate who has no parental rights.

Katherine Jackson's approval as permanent guardian is in accordance with her son's wishes, who named her in a 2002 will as the person he wanted to raise his children.

Last week, Katherine Jackson and her son's ex-wife, Deborah Rowe, reached an agreement over custody issues. Rowe never formally petitioned for custody, but will receive some visits with Jackson's two oldest children, to whom she gave birth while the couple was married in the late 1990s.

Rowe did not appear in court Monday.

Katherine Jackson arrived Monday, flanked by her daughters LaToya and Rebbie and son Randy Jackson. Several attorneys representing her were also in court.

Beckloff noted that the singer's two oldest children, 12-year-old Prince Michael and 10-year-old Paris Michael, filed declarations stating their wishes for who would raise them. He did not indicate what they said.

The agenda for Monday's hearing contained a long laundry-list of issues for Beckloff to rule on. After a morning recess, the judge was expected to consider whether Katherine Jackson can mount a challenge to two men who have are administering her son's estate, attorney John Branca and music executive John McClain.

The men were named as co-executors of Jackson's 2002 will, and have already received millions of dollars in the singer's money, property and a life insurance payout, court filings show. According to Jackson's will, 40 percent of the estate goes to Katherine Jackson, 40 percent goes to the children, and 20 percent goes to various charities.

It is unclear how much money Katherine Jackson and her grandchildren will receive in allowance from the singer's estate in the meantime. Beckloff did not state the figures in court and indicated he was likely to seal those details if attorneys asked him to do so.

The proposed figures have been redacted from court filings so far.

Beckloff did trim the amount the three children will receive, saying that there appeared to be some duplication between the expenses Katherine Jackson listed and those listed for the children.

The hearing was attended by more than 20 attorneys representing a variety of interests, including Sony/ATV, a music catalogue in which Jackson had a substantial stake, concert promoter AEG Live, and Columbia Pictures. Several of the attorneys are also handling issues in Britney Spears' conservatorship case, and an afternoon hearing scheduled in that matter was postponed.

The attorneys were outnumbered only by media outlets jockeying for seats in the hearing. A variety of broadcast, Internet and print media outlets covered the hearing, arriving more than an hour before Beckloff took the bench to get a seat. An overflow room was also required.

"He was a great star, but not a great man," Henry Bushkin — who was jokingly dubbed "Bombastic Bushkin" by Carson on his late-night NBC gabfest — told Page Six.

"Many great comedians were miserable human beings ... Johnny suffered a great many demons brought about by what I call a toxic sort of mother," Bushkin said. From an article in The New York Post, these statements by Bushkin are totally false and this reporter suggests that Bushkin is simply using his former money maker Star Johnny Carson to make more money!  Bushkin just will never have enough of that almighty dollar and will say and do anything to get it.  Read more from the New York Post's article dated November 02, 2008. Stay tuned for our TRUE story of Johnny Carson who was one of the most generous and kindest, talented people ever to be on TV.

Visionary Background
By:  Paul Van Zante, Ph.D.

Stan Irwin, George Michaud's mentor for well over 35 years and partner for the same time period has so much to talk about that it cannot all be put into one small article.  Here are just some true facts about a fabulous producer that has remained behind the scenes for far too long.

Here is just a few lines about this extremely talented and historical Producer who desires to have his name stay in the background.  He has turned down interviews with PEOPLE magazine, TIME magazine, USA Today and so many more.  Irwin does not need the publicity he says.  "My clients and all the talents need it", he humbly replies to my question of why he doesn't respond to the interviews.

Stan Irwin, producer,  was born into a show business family that dates back to vaudeville.   Irwin, well established as a pioneer and innovator in all area of show business, was the producer of the Johnny Carson "Tonight Show"  for two years,  and for almost two decades,  Vice-President and Executive Producer of the Sahara-Nevada Corporation.   Irwin's vast experience in the entertainment world has included being a comedian, actor, and special material writer, as well as world renowned impresario.   Irwin even performed as the opening act for one of his clients (Pearl Bailey) and was a big hit as a stand-up comic.  Pearl asked him to return many times since he got so many laughs and "warmed up my auciences so well".

Known as a creative thinker and discoverer of talent,  Irwin initiated major performance practices in Las Vegas: he introduced "name acts" in Strip hotel lounges as well as production shows, inaugurated the "double-star" policy for concert performances, and was the first to present Broadway theatre attractions.  Some of his accomplishments include bring The Beatles to Las Vegas for their first American Performances and while there Irwin talked them into doing an unprecendented TWO shows in one night by moving the very large crowd to the Las Vegas Convention Center from Teh Sahara Hotel.

Irwin took the chance and had the Sahara host the appearance.  Irwin stated he just knew that would be benefit the Sahara, the Strip, and ultimately the City of Las Vegas.  Irwin's name appeared on the Marquee at the Sahara for decades as its most successful producer in Las Vegas history.  Irwin even designed the Sahara logo and was VP, General Manger for the entire Del-Webb Gambling/Entertainment Corporation which included the Freemont and other downtown casinos.  Every other entertainment director on the Las Vegas strip was after Irwin for his talent to swith from hotel to hotel and they did well when they paid the right price as dictated by Irwin.  Irwin set the standards for Las Vegas that still are in effect today.  Today, Irwin's name appears on that very marquee in many major motion pictures one will see while watching HBO, STARZ or CINEMAX nightly.

Don Rickles got his start in Show Business with Stan Irwin and in 2007 in his HBO special Rickles gave Irwin credit verbally three times.  On the final "Tonight Show", Richkls and Buddy Hackett both gave credit to Irwin,  live on the show, saying... "We , meaning Johnny Carson,  as well as both of them,  would not be where they are today,  if it were not for Stan Irwin."  Some knd of tribute for a man that wishes to remain in the background and give his talents all the publicity.

The Beatles Coming To Las Vegas!

When the crowd was much more than expected, Irwin decided to have the Beatles play at the Las Vegas Convention Center.   The Beatles did stay at the Sahara.  The pool area was overrun with teenage girls, yelling "I love you Ringo!" as they tried to get a glimpse of the stars up in their rooms.

Irwin was told that the Convention Center could hold approximately 17,000 people (and this is back in the early 60's.   Irwin rearranged the stage so the stage was surrounded by the audience instead of just having the audience in front of the stage thereby accommodating 18,408 people to attend the concert and Irwin talked them into two unprecedented shows.  A first for them and another first for Las Vegas and The Beatles in The USA.

Irwin stated that when the Beatles were going to the car to go to the Convention Center from the  Sahara, he and other Sahara personnel locked arms forming a human barrier between the fans and the Beatles.  Mr. Irwin stated that "the gravity of the situation was made all too clear when he realized that if any of the human barrier tripped and fell, they all could be trampled to death by the over-abundance of fans that were on the scene."

Since Irwin was a comedian he saw the value of humor. After a fire occurred at the Sahara, Irwin put slogans on the reconstruction walls such as "We've heard of hot dice, but this is ridiculous", and "Dealers and ladies first". Burned menus were given away to guests as souvenirs.

Irwin took on George Michaud in 1968 at Michaud's request and to this day, Michaud says, “Stan Irwin is my mentor and always will be.  The man is a genius and at 88,  he still plays tennis three days a week”.  That’s energy", says Michaud.

Beyond his many theatrical enterprises, which include acting as personal manager for the late Pearl Bailey and manager for Johnny Carson, Irwin was involved in civil and political life. He served for two years in the Nevada State Legislature and earned the title "Toastmaster General of Las Vegas." In the latter capacity he officiated for every civic, religious and charitable organization in Southern Nevada.  Enjoying performing,  he toured the world as the comedian on the late Pearl Bailey's USO shows.  He is presently involved in satellite communications, children's books, television productions, home video productions, legitimate theatre special event programming and entertainment gaming consultation for the current greats of Las Vegas.

Irwin is responsible for the careers of Buddy Hackett, Don Rickles, Pat Morita, Buddy Rich, assisted immensly with Frank Sinatra’s career over the years and so many more, too numerous to mention here.  "Everyone loves Stan Irwin.  Stan always had time to speak with me”,  said  Gregory Peck.  “Irwin is the most caring, giving and responsible business executive in the entertainment industry and, man, what a pro”... said Johnny Carson.

Presently Irwin is consultant/coordinator of the American Heart Association and The Stan/Lee Media Project of Education through entertainment teaching children ages 6 through 17 on how to prevent heart attacks.

I had the pleasure to interview Stan Irwin for my upcoming book “The Producers” and Irwin said, “If I had to do it all over again, the only thing I would want to change is order in which one must work through in order to become a star.  It is just too difficult these days for a great talent to become somebody in this world of the internet, the cell phone and the bloggers”.  It was a pleasure to interview this genius and one of the last of the producers/personal managers and talent makers of the past 75 years.  Irwin was even in Vaudeville shows as a youngster. More on this later in the book and future articles.  We need more like Stan Irwin in todays world of online talent, online blogging, online "talent searching", "American Idol" and the like.  We will always miss this type of professional.
